After Canada announced a national ban, plastic shopping bags, plastic catering products, etc. will be replaced by environmentally friendly products

Shopping bags

Shopping bags made entirely or partly of plastic and used to carry goods purchased from stores will be subject to a manufacturing and import ban.

Tableware

The cutlery ban includes single-use plastic knives, forks, spoons and chopsticks that contain polystyrene or polyethylene.

Catering products

The foodservice ban includes clamshell containers, lidded containers, boxes, cups, plates and bowls made wholly or partly of plastic and designed to hold or transport ready-to-eat food or beverages.

Products affected by the ban include: expanded or styrofoam plastic; polyvinyl chloride, often used in salad containers; carbon black or black plastic food containers, often with clear lids; or oxo-degradable plastics (What is Oxo degradable plastics).

Stirring rod

Under current federal government rules, all types of plastic stir sticks will be banned. These products are often used to mix beverages or to prevent beverages from spilling from the lid.

Straw

The straw ban includes plastic straws and flexible straws packaged with drink containers (juice boxes and bags); straws containing polystyrene or polyethylene.

Single-use plastic straws that are not packaged with a beverage container are excluded in certain circumstances, such as facilitating access for people with disabilities.

The ban on the manufacture and import of the above five types of single-use plastic products in Canada came into effect on December 20. The ban on the sale of these products will come into effect one year later, on December 20, 2023.

The ban on the simultaneous manufacture, import and sale of exports will come into effect on December 20, 2025.

After the ban, degradable polylactic acid products that can replace the above plastic products will welcome people's favor.
