Uses of UV Absorbers

2023-05-31

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause significant damage to materials, which is why UV absorbers are commonly used to protect them. While these products can be effective, their efficiency can vary depending on the material, thickness, and concentration of the absorber. Generally, UV absorbers work best with thick materials because they rely on depth for their effectiveness. For very thin films that require heavy UV protection, another type of UV light stabilizers or additive may be more suitable.

Organic-based UV absorbers are typically the most effective, but different types of plastics may require specific absorbers. For example, propylene usually benefits from aryl esters, benzophenone, benzotriazoles, and formamidines for optimal protection. It is essential to test the material's UV exposure to determine the appropriate absorber and ensure continued performance through regular testing of the coating.

Uses of UV Absorbers

When it comes to polyphenylene sulfide, no other form of UV stabilizer will suffice as the UV absorber is the only type that can protect this polymer. UV absorbers are often used as the first line of defense against UV radiation damage and may be combined with quenchers or light stabilizers for maximum benefits. However, UV absorbers will eventually lose their effectiveness and become less efficient at preferentially absorbing UV light. If there is no other form of damage prevention, the material will start to show photodegradation. To avoid this problem, our customers may incorporate light quenchers or stabilizers into the material or coating.

While UV absorbers serve a vital purpose in protecting materials from UV radiation, stabilizers and additives may also be necessary to preserve the coloring of plastics. Depending on the application, a stabilizer or additive may be a better option or adjunct to UV absorbers. Careful consideration must be given to the material and its specific needs to choose the most appropriate protection method.

In order to provide customers with more convenient procurement services, iSuoChem currently provide UV stabilizers (UV stabilition agent), UV absorbers, and other related additives. We try to help customers provide the whole system of products, helping customers save transportation costs and purchasing effort.
