What is Polyethylene oxide PEO?
Polyethylene oxide (PEO) is a versatile organic compound widely used in many industries. It has no strong odor and appears as a crystalline, thermoplastic polymer that dissolves easily in water. Its unique spiral structure allows it to perform many functions, such as thickening, slowing release, improving lubrication, enhancing adhesion, reducing friction, and helping with dispersion.
This product is suitable for a broad range of applications including paper manufacturing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, ceramics, water treatment, and firefighting. In water-based adhesives, PEO serves as an effective thickener. It can be dissolved in hot water or pre-dispersed in a water-soluble non-aqueous solvent. Even a small amount (1%–5% by weight) in water forms a highly viscous solution.
PEO is also used in military applications as a binder for propellants when mixed with nitrate plasticizers. In paints, it acts as a thickener and dispersant for latex and paint removers. In paper production, it helps disperse long fibers, retain fillers, and serves as a low-viscosity adhesive.
